Church Life

Social Events

In addition to the worship activities and the activities of other groups who use St James on a regular basis, the church holds a number of social events throughout the year. The regular events are listed below and there are also occasional theatre trips, quizes and picnics.

Coffee Cup (Wednesday mornings in school term-time)
Pop in for hot drinks and a chat over one big coffee table. Men and women of all ages welcome.

Plants Plus (mid-May)
This is an opportunity to buy home grown plants for your garden. Home made produce is also sold and a raffle held. All funds raised go towards supporting the church’s activities.

Duck Races (June)

                                   Duck Race for Web

St James hosts a morning of duck races on a small stretch of the River Shuttle between Crofton Avenue and Murchison Avenue. Prizes are awarded for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fastest ducks in each race. A popular family event with many participants entering more than one race.

Old Bexley Music Festival (June/July)

Little Big Band at St James

For the past two years, we have joined with local churches in presenting a Music Festival for the Bexley area. Seven churches have provided a wonderful variety of concerts: classical, light opera, West End theatre, jazz and choral evensong, to name a few. St James hosted Bird College’s excellent "Little Big Band".

Country Walk

                                 Country Walk 2016

Once a year, the walkers gather at St James on a Saturday morning and then head off into the countryside for a walk of around 5 to 6 miles.  So far our walking has taken us to Leaves Green, Ightam Mote, Shipbourne, Otford, Knole Park and Trosley Country Park. A chance to catch up with each other and with the great outdoors.

Harvest Supper (October)
A sit down meal provided by a group of church members to mark the eve of the Harvest Thanksgiving Service. A variety of activities, quizzes etc. help make this a great evening for adults and children alike.

Blendon Fair (end of November)
A great opportunity to get some early Christmas presents from this wide selection of stalls selling good quality gifts, crafts, toys and home made produce. Raffles, tombolas, quizzes and activities for all the family are also on offer and a special festive visitor usually makes an appearance! The Café Noel provides delicious lunchtime snacks and an opportunity to sit down and have a break from all that shopping.
